Many of Tims’ art pieces are raku fired. The word raku means “Happiness Through Chance”. This is a 16th century Japanese method of firing pottery. The room temperature glazed pottery is placed in the raku kiln and brought up to 1800 degrees. It is then taken from the kiln while glowing orange and placed in a bed of combustable materials such as shredded paper or sawdust. Next a metal container placed over the pottery cutting off the oxygen. The combination of extreme temperature variations and the final outcome of the process always a surprise. With Raku you can never tell exactly how each individual piece will turn out. This is why Raku potters are so intrigued by the firing technique.
