Wendy Shragg

I’m a mixed media artist born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. It wasn't until adulthood that I chose to call the other side of the river my home.  Family is everything to me, and I thank my lucky stars every day for my supportive husband (who is most definitely my loudest cheerleader) and my three grown kids…who I’m grateful to say, still enjoy traveling and spending time with us! I love to try out little hole-in-the-wall restaurants, so if you’re ever looking for a recommendation, drop me a line! My daily routine includes meditation and yoga; both of which help center me and remind me of the importance of paying attention to the present moment…the only space in which we can truly experience being alive. And yes, I have a serious art supply addiction!

I studied design at the University of Minnesota, where I learned about color theory and principles.  As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved to create.  Being a creative has blessed me with the ability to maintain the curiosity of a child…always exploring, always thinking, always wondering. I notice everyday objects through my own unique lens....a shadow cast on the pavement, cloud formations on a beautiful summer day, the pattern formed by a footprint in the sand. I’m an active observer of life. I breathe in the intricacies of the way light and shadow play, line and form coexist, positive and negative space dance. I marvel at the beauty of a sunrise or sunset and am in awe and amazement that only in nature, would we find that precise combination of colors on the same palette. I always think to myself…if I were to paint that, nobody would believe it was real. My imagination runs free.

For a while now, I've felt an underlying tug that there was something I should be doing; a path I should be taking, but I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Over the past few years I've been on a journey of exploration full of self-discovery. I've been fortunate to receive so many experiential gifts along the way. I've come to know that sometimes the things that are hardest to see are right in front of us. So obvious that if they were any more clear, we would stumble over them. I was looking so hard for what I felt was calling me, that only by letting go of the looking and doing what I loved, could I discover it was right there all along; waiting patiently for me. The creative piece of my life that had been my joy for so many years was urging me to play. I realized that I needed to do what makes me come alive and DO IT OFTEN!

I have two distinct bodies of work. One is expressed on canvas, and the other on paper. The canvas pieces are larger and allow me the wild freedom to feel the energy that courses through my body and express that through the marks I make. The paper pieces are smaller format, and force me to look within and listen for that quiet voice. In these smaller works, as each contemplative character comes to life, they bring forth a message that resides deep within their soul. It is my joy, as the artist, to share that with you.

Whether large or small, each piece is created from a place deep within my heart. I approach my art with a willingness to trust. My brush moves as a conduit for my soul's truth. Each work becomes a visual storytelling whose exchange is equal parts creating and allowing; I make things happen and then I let things happen. Every brushstroke becomes a new bit of dialogue for me to respond to. Marks and patterns appear on my canvas with sometimes dizzying speed. Sometimes they stay, and sometimes they go, only to be covered by more paint to make things even more interesting. With each layer, I search the piece, but I don't know what for...until I find it. The gift. Sometimes it screams to me and sometimes I have to listen for its quiet whisper. But one thing is certain. It's always there...and I always know when I've found it.

We each have a story, and no two of us are alike, but I believe that we are all connected, in some magical way. My hope is that my work is open enough to encourage the viewer to see their own story in it. Witnessing that spark of connection brings me pure joy. This is where the magic happens.
