Born in a country where awesome beauty abounds, Tim Howe was surrounded by the vastness and overwhelming majesty of New Zealand's landscape. It is here where he was first inspired to express nature's limitless beauty through his art.

After graduating from The Wellington School of Visual Arts, Howe immigrated to the United States entering the art arena at first through graphic design and illustration and later through fine art. Howe has been influenced by many painters.from the richness of brushstroke and pigment of Van Gogh, to the exploration of colours of Matisse, to the expressive style of DeKooning and to the spontaneity of Pollock. Howe's approach to painting has changed enormously throughout his career as he has devoted himself to developing and perfecting his own style.

The desire to paint in the light and colours of the Mediterranean led Howe to relocate to Europe where he embarked on an extensive period of study and travel through Spain, France and Italy. Here he painted and studied on the same soil as the great masters of the late nineteenth century, absorbing and reproducing the area's particular quality of light. The atmosphere of the Mediterranean proved to be the perfect backdrop for Howe's distinctive styles.

Howe's dramatic use of colour and texturing captures his subject matter with a unique contemporary flair thus creating a joyful and dynamic effect focusing on both light and surface texture. The vivid accents and the lively vigorous brushstrokes both evoke a vibrant style whether it be a landscape, figure or abstract. The apparent speed with which the paint has been applied is indicative of the artist's restless search for new images of familiar subjects.

Howe's unusual blending of styles attracts both the traditional and contemporary collector alike. His landscapes seem to exist out side the frame.literally seem to stretch beyond the canvas.whereas his abstracts boast swathes of bright contrasting colours with spontaneous brushstrokes and expressive accents. His figures come to life with every slash of brush or pallet knife as he searches for a painterly equivalent to flesh and light. This dynamic rhythm between artist and canvas allows Howe to create not merely an image, but a mood.an atmosphere...a sense of awareness.but all within an uneasy balance of order and chaos.

"There are no boundaries between Impressionism and Abstraction. As a landscape artist, I am naturally inspired to paint by what I see in nature but because I come from a strong graphic design background, I tend to draw upon this experience in creating my paintings by utilizing the disciplines of both impressionism and abstraction. I am predisposed to thinking in terms of images as either being positive or negative shapes, while isolating the most important colours. I see this as a more graphic and more contemporary way of painting. I find myself using nature's elements along with its' shapes and images and subsequently interpreting them on canvas in a bolder, more graphic way.at times utilizing exaggerated forms and colours for maximum effect.

Having art surround us, as does nature, is crucial to all of our lives. It's important to me that art remain an equalizer in society.available to all.exclusive to none."

Howe is an ambitious painter who will never limit his subject matter, his techniques or his stylistic development. This philosophy, along with his aesthetic spirit, will always allow him to bring fresh interpretations and new energies to his work.
