As an American landscape painter, I create atmospheric paintings of the natural world. Each encounter with the land, especially early and late in the day, gives me a sense of connection with the earth and enchants me with the interplay of light, color, and mood. The simple elegance of a meandering stream at sunset, a river channel at dusk, or thunderclouds building over a marsh are examples of what compels me to create.
When I paint, I strive to free my spirit, observant and meditative, to reflect this enchantment and endless appreciation of the landscape. I use a direct style of painting outdoors, either in oil or pastel, to quickly capture color and atmosphere, usually on small boards. In the studio, larger paintings in oil are created in an indirect manner, interweaving opaque and transparent layers of luminous color and enigmatic shadow to create a luminous quality.
