Mixed Media ~ Sculpture

When I look at my work it makes me laugh. I love taking the everyday object or subject and taking it to a new level. My hope is that others will look at my work and not only see the details of the handmade tiles and found objects, but also have a laugh at the sculpture itself.

I think people get too caught up in their working lives and don't take the time to look and enjoy the small things in life. It really takes the right person to enjoy my work and place it in their homes. I see these people as taking the time to laugh at life and enjoy sharing that with other people that come into their lives and homes.

Each "naked" cast sculpture spends a period of time in my studio before I begin working on it. This gives me time to develop a relationship with the form and begin looking at my materials available in relation to the piece. I begin to develop in my mind the attitude or personality the sculpture will impart to the viewer.

The sculptural base of the majority of my work is slip cast ceramic or cement. Each tile, ceramic shard or found object is adhered to the base individually. Handmade tile is a very labor-intensive process and each tile is cut, glazed, and loaded into the kiln individually. When areas are grouted different colors, time is taken to carefully mask off these sections. The results are worth it.

My work grew from the desire to find and create beautiful things for the garden. The sculptures can be outside in protected areas but should be brought in during the colder months.
