Kate Birch studied painting and drawing at the University of Utah and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in 2005. The pattern and texture in her mixed-media floral paintings are inspired by her love for textile design. These paintings focus on the decorative influence of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement, as well as patterns from the Orient, Morocco and Mexico. Kate is constantly studying pattern and design found in fabric, rugs, tiles and papers. The creation of her paintings is focused primarily on process, using stencil and charcoal drawings layered throughout each piece. The floral patterns emerge into a complete painting through an extensive push and pull of paint that reminds Kate a little of weaving. Kate lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and their three children. She exhibits her work in galleries across the U.S. Her work is currently being published by Poem's Publishing and is sold internationally.
