Kairong Liu came to the United States from main land China in 1981. Born in 1958, he began studying art at a young age in his home city of Wuhan, Hubei, where his parents where both medical doctors. Before emigrating, he worked for two years as a graphic artist for Hubei Forest Machine Company.

In America he received his Bachelor of Art at Westmar University in Le Mars, Iowa. He then went on to receive his Masters of Fine Art from the University of South Dakota in 1988. Since settling in the Twin Cities, Kai has taught many private painting workshops, has instructed at the Minnetonka Center for the Art, and has taught classes at Edina and Bloomington Art Centers.

Kairong Liu has captured countless scenes of the Twin Cities and surrounding states. He says that there is always beauty to be found in the most mundane or unexpected places and tries to reveal that in his paintings. He especially loves to paint outdoors and in the countryside.

Kairong Liu's work as been collected by Mayo Clinic, Cargill, Midwest Federal Reserve Bank, and many other local businesses and private collectors. Recently, Kai was commissioned to do a piece by the First Lady of Minnesota, Mrs. Pawlenty. He has two pieces of his work currently hanging in the Governors mansion in St. Paul Minnesota.
