I am either gifted or afflicted with an uncontrollable need to make art. I have woven .soldered, coiled, sculpted, drawn, painted, planted, or manipulated a multiplicity of tools and materials in order to achieve that end. I am currently involved in what I would describe as a photo-realist style of painting. I work from 35mm slides taken with my Minolta camera. I have done still life, portraiture, architecture and studies of leaves and grasses of local, state, and national parks and forests. I also love the sticks and stones of the Lake Superior shore area. I enjoy traveling to wonderful places in my search for subject matter. From my own back yard gardens and those of my family and neighbors, to the country roads of England and cities and villages in France I have found a multitude of beautiful imagery to paint.
The passage from subject to finished painting is an enormously selective process. I believe that the steps I take, including using several slides, allows me to present a dramatic or heightened image of reality. When I am successful, even I am astounded at the results of my patient and often difficult struggle with my media. I work with watercolor and pencil on paper and acrylic on canvas.
