Jamali and Mystical Expressionism
Raised in the foothills of the Himalayas near the Khyber Pass in northwest Pakistan, at the age of 16, Jamali lived in the desert amongst the Sufi, a people devoted to the worship of a higher omnipresence or mysterium tremendum through intimate and personal rituals, such as dancing. The Sufi's belief in leading a life of inner calm, reflection and love had great influence on the your Jamali and his subsequent artistic endeavors.
In 1976, Jamali recognized his calling through a series of powerful and mystical dreams. He developed a particular aesthetic that utilizes the complexity of his mediums while incorporating decidedly expressive characteristics. Incorporating the Sufi rituals, Jamali dances over the surface of his paintings in a meditative state.
